Festive sarees

Festive sarees are the ones you reach for at Diwali, Navratri, family pujas and the long run of celebrations in between. They are richer in colour and surface than everyday sarees, and the best of them are still comfortable enough to wear from the morning puja to the late dinner. This edit gathers Banarasi weaves, Bandhani, Nakshi, Ajrakh and Lagda Patti sarees in jewel tones, in modal silk, dola silk and Banarasi weaves.
We hand-pick each design from printers and weavers in Kutch and Varanasi and keep the quantities small. A festive saree should feel like a choice rather than a uniform, so we avoid long repeats of the same print. If you are shopping for several family occasions, choose one rich saree for the main evening and a lighter one for the day events, so you are comfortable all week.

Choose by how long you will wear it
A full day of puja, visits and food asks for a fabric that moves easily. Modal silk is light and comfortable. Banarasi weaves look grand and hold their shape, but they have more presence, so they suit shorter and more formal hours.
Let the festival guide the colour
Reds, maroons and oranges are classic for pujas and Navratri. Deep greens, blues and purples feel rich at Diwali evenings. Yellow and pastel shades are lovely for daytime gatherings. Ask yourself where you will photograph well: in warm lamp light, deeper shades often glow.
Decide where the decoration lives
Some festive sarees put their weight in the pallu, as with Nakshi and Lagda Patti. Others spread the pattern across the body, as with Bandhani, Ajrakh or a Banarasi weave. A pallu-led saree gives you freedom to wear it more than once with different blouses.
Prepare for the day
Pleat the saree ahead and check the fall in daylight and lamp light. Keep a safety pin and a small kit in your bag. After the festival, dry clean it and store it folded in a cotton cover.
Think about the photographs
Festivals come with family photographs. Saturated colours such as wine, deep green or marigold read well in a crowd, while pastels look lovely in daylight. Choose the shade you would be glad to see on the wall for years.
Questions about festive sarees
Which saree is best for Diwali?
Jewel tones in modal silk or a Banarasi weave suit Diwali evenings. Choose deep green, wine, blue or maroon if you want something rich that photographs well in lamp light.
What should I wear for a puja at home?
A comfortable modal silk saree in a warm colour is a good choice. Lighter fabrics let you sit on the floor, move around and serve guests without discomfort.
